Understanding Different Wool Types

Batt: Carded wool is loaded onto a drum carder, which compresses and combs the fibres together. The wool is then removed in a thick, airy sheet called a batt. Batts are soft, easy to pull sections from, and ideal for felting, though they don’t easily separate into strips.
Sliver: Wool is removed from the drum carder in a continuous rope-like length, with most fibres running in one direction, though some remain mixed, making it light, bouncy, and fast to felt with.
Tops: Carded wool is further combed to align all fibres in a single direction, reducing crimp and curl. Wool tops provide smooth, fine finishes, making them perfect for detailed felting projects.
